Over the last year, free agency has become one of the leading stories in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). That doesn’t look to change anytime soon. Especially after recent news that Rory MacDonald may be headed to Bellator and Donald Cerrone has re-signed with the UFC. With those recognizable names off of the board, we open up our MMA free agent watch files on another available talent: Marlon Moraes.
MMA Free Agent Watch: Marlon Moraes
Moraes is one of the most recognized names fighting for World Series of Fighting. He has been a mainstay with the company since its inception in 2012, including appearing on WSOF 1.
Moraes has been the companies only bantamweight champion, after the title was introduced in 2014. He has defended his 135 pound title on five different occasions and headlined four events for the promotion. Suffice to say, Marlon Moraes is the heart of WSOF. The question is, can the company afford to let him go, and are they willing to?
In an interview with MMAJunkie WSOF CEO Carlos Silva said he felt “optimistic” about his bantamweight champion returning to the company. And why shouldn’t he? At 28-years-old, Moraes is a fighter the company can build around and be willing to shell out big bucks for.
The greater question is, will the UFC come calling? As one of the best bantamweights in the world, there is good reason to believe the world’s top MMA promotion would be interesting. It remains to be seen if they have made any their intentions known yet to the young combatant. In this writer’s opinion, Moraes signs one more contract with the WSOF before he finally makes the move to a bigger promotion.
When asking our Twitter followers where they think Moraes will land, the majority chose a move to the UFC. Meaning a very nice edition to a UFC bantamweight division that is always getting better.
